QuayQuip-PEM to supply Marine Atlantic terminal in Nova Scotia

Marine Atlantic Inc. is a federal Crown corporation that reports to the Canadian Parliament through the Minister of Transport. The Corporation provides a constitutionally mandated passenger and commercial marine transportation service between the Island of Newfoundland and the Province of Nova Scotia. Its mission calls for safety first and also stresses environmental responsibility, reliability, courtesy and value for money.

Marine Atlantic provides two ferry services. The first operates every day of the year on a 96 nautical mile route between Port aux Basques, Newfoundland and Labrador and North Sydney, Nova Scotia. The second is a 280 nautical mile, tri-weekly ferry service between Argentia, Newfoundland and Labrador and North Sydney, Nova Scotia, starting in mid-June and closing late September.

Finite Element advances for Parallel Movement Fenders

Shown here are new Parallel Movement Fenders, among 17 on their way to Singapore for installation on berthing dolphins. Each unit weighs 50 tonnes and is designed for an energy absorption of 3.2 Megajoules.

For probably the first time ever the entire fender systems were designed using Finite Element Modelling. This, and the advanced hinge and bearing technology employed, makes the fender design the most sophisticated anywhere to date.
