Precision berthing with Navicom

HPLQuayQuip and Navicom Dynamics have teamed up to give an even better service for Navicom users and prospective customers throughout Europe. Navicom’s HarbourPilot and ShuttlePilot ranges provide precision navigation and berthing information to aid pilots and others involved in safety critical ship manoeuvres. QuayQuip will be organising evaluation trials, demonstrations and a first point of contact on routine technical and logistical issues.

For port designers, obtaining accurate and relevant ship berthing speeds and angles has always been a challenge. BS6349, PIANC, EAU and other design guides are helpful for defining ultimate design limits, but operating within these parameters relies almost entirely on the skill and judgement of masters and pilots. In poor weather, in congested ports and under pressure to reduce turnaround times, the challenges to safety are clear.

HarbourPilot and ShuttlePilot are quick to set up, highly accurate and simple to operate. A choice of DGPS, NavDif or RTK positioning provides users with a level of precision never before possible. Using special piloting software, the ship’s position is overlaid onto official electronic charts to show speed, vector, heading and rate of turn – everything needed to support safe manoeuvring in restricted spaces.

Portable Piloting Units (PPU) are an increasingly important professional tool for:

  • Avoiding accidents
  • Safer movement of ships through busy waters
  • Avoiding berthing incidents
  • Increasing the operating window in poor visibility and at night
  • Replacing costly and unreliable laser docking systems
